OFFSIDE TRAPP (GER: Abseitsfalle) Karin works in the personnel department for a dishwasher manufacturer in a city in Germany’s industrial Ruhr region, where she is waiting for her big career break. One day, she gets it – unexpected and hard to swallow: 400 people have to be laid off, otherwise the plant will be shut down as per edict by the American parent company. Karin is appointed to assist the man in charge of carrying out the layoffs, Dr. Kruger. To save face publicly, workers are enticed to leave on their own by accepting severance packages or relocation offers. Karin now has her chance and no choice – the factory has to be saved. But getting ahead at the expense of her colleagues puts her in a moral quandary. It gets worse. She meets Mike, an assembly line worker, who stars on the company soccer team. Leave on their own!? Remove themselves??! Are there no lows the crisis won’t stoop to?! Never ever! Enough is enough! Mike mobilizes the soccer team to show the parent company and Karin’s ‘socially acceptable’ program a straight red. Karin and Mike – two people, two sides. And yet, they fall in love. Head over heels. Against which they – to stay true to their camps – fight tooth and nail. Karin sticks with Kruger, whom she coaches. He puts her long sought-after career promotion within reach, while also expressing interest in her. Karin’s feelings become more and more mired between the fronts. “Abseitsfalle” is a love story in the age of globalization, and a story of working-class heroes that use the humor of the desperate to fight against their fate. |
